The Nerdery - Overnight Website Challenge

Chicago 2012, November 17-18

Chicago Gateway Green

Chicago Gateway Green was founded in 1986 on the belief that beauty and sustainability go hand in hand. Today, Chicago Gateway Green's projects help to improve the local environment and the quality of life for millions of Chicagoland residents and visitors.

Chicago Gateway Green improves Chicago’s communities through three key programs: the Expressway Partnership, transforming city roadways into landscaped parkways; the International Sculpture Program, beautifying gateways through the installation of public, international art on expressways; and the Tree Partnership Program, a large-scale tree planting initiative that transforms vacant land into tree-filled green spaces.

What new functionality we are looking for

Chicago Gateway Green is a community oriented organization. CGG could not fulfill its mission without the support of the Chicago business community and local residents. The website should accomplish two goals: reaching out to potential partners and providing information for those interested in making their lives greener and more sustainable. The staff at CGG has worked hard to create fun blog posts (as well as a Kids Corner!) and we're excited to share these resources with the world!

The website is also used to collect information and reach out to those interested in volunteering time or donating resources. It is used to communicate news, updates, and upcoming events to various stakeholders. The audience of the website includes board members, business owners and high-level management, volunteers, donors, local entertainers/celebrities/politicians, and the Chicago community.

How the new functionality will help

A new website will help Chicago Gateway Green fulfill our mission by finding vital supporters. Without sponsorships and volunteers, Chicago Gateway Green couldn't exist!

More recently, in order to fulfill our mission of greening and beautifying Chicago, Chicago Gateway Green has focused on education and outreach. We want to help people green their own lives. To accomplish this, CGG started a sustainability blog with three posts every week and we hope to promote this new resource through our website.

Chicago Gateway Green does an excellent job year after year beautifying the city. The drive to work is that much more pleasant for the hundreds of thousands of daily commuters. I've been seeing their logo above Expressway gardens for as long as I can remember traveling to and from Chicago. A redesigned website would be an amazing asset for Chicago Gateway Green to continue doing what they do best.

Chicago Gateway Green is a wonderful non-profit in Chicago that has such an enormous impact on the city by keeping it a beautiful place to live and visit for its millions of residents and tourists. Many people don't realize that Gateway Green is the organization behind the beautiful gardens along all of the city's major expressways.

One way to start spreading awareness about the importance of Gateway Green is by updating the website. This will bring more visitors to the website everyday, and the more people behind CGG, the more the organization can continue to grow and enhance Chicago!

Hi,

I would like to step forward and acknowledge the incredible work the people with Chicago Gateway Green puts forward to morph Chicago into the next Furn gully. That was a joke, but seriously I emphasize PEOPLE because the passion and execution of projects to green and beautiful Chicago represents the success of this organization. From creating urban parks and farms to optimize vacant parking lots, the highway initiative and the magnitude of events for the community is why CGG deserves a website that mirrors its reputation.

CGG takes its time to makeover Chicago and its time to makeover CGG!

Gateway Green is an incredible organization. The best/most caring people are involved with the initiative and the meaning behind what they do is amazing. Gateway Green is purely focused on the great city of Chicago on beautifying/greening and making the city greater then she already is. After 25+ years of servicing the community, Gateway remains to a leader in the greening effort in the country and the pride of our city. A better website would help Gateway reach more people effectively and help them spread the understanding of the importance behind their mission.

CGG is the one and only private, non-profit entity focusing on beautifying Chicago's motorways, parks, empty space, and neighborhoods. Help to keep Chicago clean, welcoming, and proud to all that visit, live and work here. Everyone knows that a well-kept, clean and pretty space is more comfortable than the alternative! Please vote, give your time and money generously, and the City will give back to you ...

Chicago Gateway Green is 26 years old, but that doesn't mean their website needs to be! CGG is a great organization whose work reaches far and wide. Instead of focusing on a particular area or demographic, CGG impacts ALL of Chicago and its residents/visitors. To increase the amount of work they can accomplish, they need to spread the word. Their website could really use the Nerdery's help!

Chicago Gateway Green is one of the reasons why Chicago is the most beautiful city in America. Like all nonprofit organizations, CGG is made possible only by the efforts of its volunteers and sponsors. My wish is that The Nerdery will help make CGG's website just as green, clean, and beautiful as CGG has made Chicago's parks, neighborhoods, and expressways. A more beautiful and dynamic website for CGG means a more beautiful and dynamic city for us.

You would be hard pressed to find a more dedicated, effervescent, and knowledgeable group than the team at Chicago Gateway Green. The combination of passion for educating the general public about the mission to keep Chicago green & clean is only matched by their impressive level of professionalism. The staff is fabulous at attracting different volunteers to help uncover opportunities that are continuously bettering the organization. CGG deserves a website that is reflective of them - which includes great styling that matches high quality content and visuals that are reflective of what the organization contributes to the greater Chicago community. Thank you in advance for considering helping Chicago Gateway Green!

Gateway Green is truly an amazing and unique non-profit organization. Since 1986, Gateway Green has been dedicated to beautifying Chicago’s expressways, gateways and neighborhoods. Many organizations strive to make the world a better place and accomplish their mission but Gateway Green has not only succeeded in making Chicago more beautiful but it continues to achieve its mission and set new goals. Even when I travel to other countries people constantly tell how impressed they are with Chicago and how beautiful the city has become over the years. When I hear comments like this it makes me happy because I know all of the hard work and sacrifices that are made by Gateway Green to make this happen. Gateway Green has great leadership and volunteers. Everyone in the organization is dedicated to making a positive difference to the City of Chicago. Chicago is lucky to have a wonderful non-profit organization like Gateway Green.

Chicago Gateway Green does so much to impact the city of Chicago. The benefits and fundraisers they organize for the community are absolutely incredible, but they are really in need of an updated website that reflects this, that is just as unforgettable as their events and that gold oak leaf that we always see in their expressway gardens.

I lived in Chicago twenty-five years ago and I have had the opportunity to visit the city many times
since. It is very apparent that Chicago is much greener and cleaner now than when I resided there.
This is due in large part to the important work that is being done at Chicago Gateway Green. Certainly, an improved website would further enhance the organization's ability to create more awareness of CGG and consequently, identify more sponsors for this remarkable organization.

Chicago Gateway Green does extensive work to enhance the beauty of Chicago. The green spaces by CGG have a huge impact on why Chicago is a great place to live and a fantastic place to visit. The staff at CGG work incredibly hard to beautify Chicago and they deserve a website that reflects the wonderful work they do. A new and enhanced website will lead to additional interest in this non-profit and could be leveraged to help grow the organization.

Gateway Green is a though and innovation leader in the vast Chicago NGO scene. The city, the state, and even the world would all be better off if this fine organization was given more tools to beautify our city and help our city leaders in getting Chicago to be a premier example of sustainability and green culture.

As a staff member of Chicago Gateway Green, I can tell you first hand that a website makeover is absolutely vital. We have so many fun and necessary updates in mind, yet our stressed IT budget prevents us from making major changes to the website. Many have said it before me, but a new website would help us broaden awareness of Chicago Gateway Green's mission and allow us to identify more partners in the community. Please pick us so we can keep Chicago green and beautiful!

I have recently visited Chicago and was so impressed with the quantity of green in your fair city. Since I hail from Oregon, one of the greenest states, its hard to beat our greenery, but Chicago and the expressway landscapes is right at the top. Keep up your great efforts in making Chicago a desireable place to live and visit by updating your website and enhancing this organizations exposure.

The group at CGG is an unbelievable group. Their cause is extremely important and one that I believe makes the city of Chicago a better place. I think a website redesign would go a long way to helping further their cause and reach.

As a somewhat frequent visitor to Chicago, I have to admit that the city's expressways are definitely more friendly than many others. Much of this is in thanks to Chicago Gateway Green. Sense of place is a big deal when it comes to city pride -- if you don't feel comfortable and welcomed in a place, you aren't going to want to sing its praises. Chicagoans have much to be proud of. Particularly its corporate citizens that give to the city -- and the environment -- through the various programs Chicago Gateway Green coordinates and executes. To live somewhere that both appreciates the value of loving your home, and understands the need to protect the planet, is important. Chicago is lucky to have an organization that leads the way on these efforts and it should do all it can to further support Chicago Gateway Green and its good works. The more help the organization gets, the more help the city, its open space and its trees will receive. A win-win.

Our Mission

Chicago Gateway Green is dedicated to greening and beautifying Chicago’s expressways, gateways and neighborhoods.
